The Hugo Burge Foundation

March 25 found me driving back to Scotland where I'd lived for 20 years. I was heading for the Hugo Burge Foundation where I'd been given a Textile residency for a month. I arrived (by chance) on my birthday and was soon shown, past the geese field, the tree where the owl sits, and the boat on stilts, to a turret which was my studio for the month. Best birthday present ever. There is a real feeling there of money being well spent on beautiful craftsmanship and a place that really appreciates artists. It's such a difficult, amazing but complicated life often being an artist , and to be in such a space dedicated to artists and being able to breathe for a time was such a delight and privilege. I spread my fabrics all around the turret and brought some of my creatures who felt very at home there. And spend the month sitting by a window stitching and thinking and stitching some more.

The 62 Group Of Textile Artists
I was really excited in Autumn 24 to be told I'd been awarded the Associate membership for The 62 Textile Group . This comes with some prize money, support for two years, and being part of such an illustrious textile group.
I never went to art college, it wasn't an option when I was younger, so it definitely has been a very winding journey to be at this place now. It was only in 2022 that I finally allowed out the creature tapping away to be let out from the door in my head, and returned to making after 20 years. There is a small part of me of course that wonder what if , what if I'd been able to go to art school, had that backing, had all those years of making. But it's been an interesting life, I like where my brain is now , and I have a degree of calmness now which allows space in my head for creating. Those creatures in there are demanding and I think earlier in life there was too much chaos to give them the space they needed.
